There was a great group of physical therapists down there, and some from the UK brought over this PPAM device - it's a frame with an inflatable part that can fit both above and below the knee amputations. The PTs were getting the patients (even the double amputees) up and walking, which was great to see. They're building up their muscles for the prosthetics lab that is arriving this month!

Denise, my friend from my last trip/roommate for both trips/personal hero/the coolest volunteer in Haiti, showed the amputees her prosthetics leg and talked to them about what to expect with a prosthetic limb, the time it takes to adjust the fit, etc. The patients loved seeing her again! They told her she was like a celebrity! The young lady on the far right on the bench is the patient who was transported to the hospital towards the end of my trip who needed her arm and leg amputated. She was extremely depressed and said God told her not to have them amputated. When I saw her in the tents on my first day back, she looked great. I told her it was so great to see her smiling and doing so well, and I had been thinking about her since my last trip. She told me it was by the grace of God that she was alive and thanked me - An amazing turn-around in just a few months!

We had a fantastic group of volunteers down there! During my last trip, we were up to (I think) 500 earthquake victims. By the time I left on May 1st, there were right around 90. The hospital is getting back to the way it was before the earthquake. But it still had its share of difficult days - we had a young boy come in who had been hit by a car and needed a surgical completion of the amputation above his elbow. A few nights later we tried to resuscitate an infant in the ICU unsuccessfully that we think dies due to meningitis. But overall, the resiliency of the Haitian people is astounding. They have been through so much, but they are all always smiling.

It was so great to see some of the patients, staff, and especially Dr. Jerry Bernard, the general surgeon of the hospital who really stepped up to the plate! He gave me a huge hug when he saw me and said he'll miss me until I come back in December. The prosthetics lab with Dr. Lovejoy out of Jacksonville should be up and running this month - The majority of the earthquake victims still in the hospital in Milot are medically stable, just waiting on prosthetics before returning to Port au Prince. The patients can't wait!

Four of the children that were taken to Shriner's in Massachusetts for treatment during my last trip made it safely back to Port au Prince while we were in Milot and were reunited with their families. Here's an article about the amazing Dr. Ian Goodman who headed up our team on this trip and his struggle to get the children out of Haiti, and an article about their arrival and reunion with their families. The original conditions demanded that the children all return to Haiti after they were treated and be back with their families, but its hard to hear their parents say they would rather have their children stay in the US because they would have a better future.

My next trip is in December, unless I get talked into going back between now and then, which would not be very surprising...

Over 50 patients were discharged earlier in the week which was good. Its a little tough to deal with though because they're sent "home" to port au prince but they don't really have a home to go to. They get off the bus with a tent. But they seem excited to go back. There are a good number of patients that are going to stick around for the prosthetics lab that everyone is very excited for!

There is a great physical therapy group down here working on getting patients up and walking. A group from England brought over this crutch device that has an inflatable hole that they put the amputated leg stump in and they can walk with a walker. I went over yesterday and watched a lot of the amputees get up and walk which was really amazing to see. I'll put up pictures when I'm back. They even had some of the double leg amputees walking!

I've managed to stay busy running the OR- just when things seem to be under control, someone comes in after being hit by a car or something fun like that. It definitely hasn't been boring!

Some of the kids that were sent to Massachussetts for care during my last trip are actually supposed to be flying in to port au prince tomorrow where their families will be waiting so we're keeping our fingers crossed that all goes as planned!

Things are very different this time! There's way fewer patients, and its less acute care, more long term care. But there's still a lot to do! And its really hot. I've seen a lot of the patients from last time, and they all seem to be doing well. Its a great group! Tomorrow's gonna be busy!
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerryCarolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09497243028376883304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744445017016846964.post-40494271196600817212010-04-23T13:16:00.000-04:002010-04-23T13:16:52.532-04:00Haiti Round 2!<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I'm headed back to Haiti tomorrow!! I'm very excited - I'm going down with a group of people down there my first week from St. Louis and Massachusetts (including my roommate Denise!!). It sounds like things are a lot different at the hospital and more patients are going home, but I'm sure there will still be a lot of work to do! If Verizon cooperates, hopefully I'll be able to send some pictures!

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Also for the couple of people who want to know about my personal life - I'm in Missouri! I took a travel job at the beginning of the month at University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. It's all going really well - it's definitely not Atlanta, but I kind of like it... I'll be here until July 10th, and then who knows!! Carolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09497243028376883304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744445017016846964.post-73747982862791811932010-03-07T13:03:00.000-05:002010-03-07T13:03:19.585-05:00The biggest baby heads I have ever seen...

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A nearby orphanage had two babies with severe hydrocephalus, excessive spinal fluid inside the skull, and Dr. Suresh Magge, a neurosurgeon from DC, came down to put VP shunts in.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">One of the orphans

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Here are some pictures of our Chilean UN friends that drove through nightly, took a couple pictures, and left - one afternoon they dropped off a seizing patient and took a picture and left. But here's a funny story from that little incident - when the man was recovering in our PACU from the seizure, he kept trying to get out of the bed. So every time I walked through PACU, I would tell him to lay down over and over and over again, and he didn't really listen. So I asked one of the translators how to say "lie down" in Creole, and I heard "touche" - so for the next hour or two, every time I walked through PACU, I would say "TOUCHE!" and still, he didn't seem to be following my instructions very well - he would just kinda stare at me and continue trying to get out of bed. I just figured he was confused after just having a seizure... Well towards the end of the day, I was passing through PACU, and there was a bunch of people around - transporters, translators, local people, patients and family members, and Dr. Bernard, the Haitien hospital surgeon. So I told the post-seizure guy "Touche! Touche!" and Dr. Bernard came running over to me and said "NO! STOP! You're telling him to touch you! It's 'KOUCHE' not 'TOUCHE'!" I could feel my face turning red, and EVERYONE in the room was howling. Needless to say, I didn't attempt to speak much Creole after that...

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Yesterday I went to have a birthday lunch with my mother, and she handed me an article from the wall street journal on Monday about a mother who had been searching for her two year old son since the earthquake and had tracked him down to a hospital in Milot. I raced through the article reading the details about the baby's leg being amputated, his arrival to Milot at the same time I got there, etc. When I saw the picture of the mother holding a photo of her missing son my heart stopped. I knew exactly who the boy was. I tore through my pictures and compared one I had taken of our Jean Pierre and I knew it had to be him. I frantically started emailing two of the peds nurses I met down there that were staying down there longer than I was. They both emailed me back that it was Jean Pierre! The updated article from the wall street journal today says they flew the little boy to be reunited with his mother! Here is the article from today and there's a link on that page to the article from Monday:
Back to work tomorrow but hopefully will put some pictures from my camera up here soon
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerryCarolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09497243028376883304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744445017016846964.post-1981133436953466852010-02-19T13:59:00.000-05:002010-02-19T14:04:08.215-05:00

Here are the last two pics from my phone me and Tim Traynor, your worst nightmare and me with John, my favorite surgeon to work with EVER and my new hero and my birthday savior, Dr Lovejoy III
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerryCarolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09497243028376883304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744445017016846964.post-66666425078213930872010-02-19T13:56:00.000-05:002010-02-19T13:52:04.721-05:00I'm coming HOME!Its official: I'm coming home today (won't be back in Atlanta til Sunday night I think-going to see Jimmy buffett in Jacksonville tomorrow night!)! I'm at the airport in cap Hatien and the plane is here and I will be on it soon. I owe all of this to both Dr. Lovejoy's and Carol Fipp. They worked so hard to get me home and have saved my birthday!!
I'm so overwhelmed and exhausted but will put up many more pictures when I'm home. I dropped my camera today and broke the screen on it but I'm pretty sure the pictures will be fine. At least I saved breaking the camera for the day I was leaving!
It was bittersweet (but mostly sweet) to do the schedule for the last time and pass off my sharpie markers and give up the control of the board (or lack thereof). The last 12 days have been hard and everyone works crazy hours everyday. I finally took a break yesterday afternoon to go see the citadel but aside from that I was working all day/night everyday.
And the Lovejoy surgery team has been ABSOLUTELY phenomenal. Words cannot express how much I loved working with them!! They are all such amazing people!
And of course I couldn't leave without having to do a little work... I ran the board for a little bit and then we got word that a helicopter would be arriving in 20 minutes to take two spine injury patients to the USS comfort bc we couldn't operate on them here. So Suresh, the neurosurgeon who actually made me like neuro a little bit (but I'm totally going back to cardiac when I go back home... We actually had a cardiac surgeon down here who found someone who might need a pericardial window-of course they find this the night before I leave...) and I ran to the tents to get the patients who hadn't been told that they were going to the comfort yet. So he took one and I took the other and we basically said you're going to the comfort NOW. But the best part of the story is that when we got the patients on the stretchers ready to go, they realized they couldn't find the key to the ambulance to pick them up. So the patients were carried down to the field and got on the chopper. The ambulance key was found shortly after that.
Alright time to get on the plane and attempt to relax. We work so hard everyday that I don't think I've had any time to think about it all. Definitely going to be hard to look back on it all-prob a rough couple days. I need some Jimmy Buffett and a margarita!!

We average 25 cases a day and we have really only 2 fully functioning ORs. Its a lot to handle. But I did make time tonight to go to the pediatric ward with my roommate Denise who is one of the few people who has been here as long as I have. She is absolutely incredible. At age 12 she was diagnosed with bone cancer and given a 10% chance of survival. At age 19 she had her leg amputated above the knee. She does not want her real age disclosed although she looks like she's 25. But now she is happily married with 3 kids. She is such an inspiration to the amputees bc she can show them that they can still lead a normal life. Some of the patients down here cannot fathom the possibility of a prosthetic limb. Its amazing to see the reactions the patients down here have to seeing this girl walk in and show them her prosthetic leg. One of the other volunteers told her that they had never seen the patients happier bc it gave them that much hope that they might be able to lead a normal life. The pictures are the kids in the peds ward. There was one girl with am amputated leg who really connected with Denise who was sobbing when she left. It was heart breaking.
The one that really got me last night and today was a young 23 year old girl transferred from the USS comfort with crush injuries to her left arm and leg. While on the ship, she refused amputation and they did everything they could but her arm and leg were infected and they removed all the nerves and muscles from her arm and explicitly said her hand would never function again. When we rounded last night she refused amputation even though she was told the infection was already damaging her kidneys and she would die. She was very upset but said that she didn't want any amputations bc God told her not to. They brought her over to the pre op area to discuss things with her today and it was too much for me. She's so young and we are telling her that she can either have an arm and leg cut off or she can die. It was so hard bc it was a girl my exact age and it hit way too close to home. I can't imagine how I would feel being told those options at such a young age. She agreed to the amputations and we're supposed to do them tomorrow. I just am realizing how much I take for granted everyday.
That's it for tonight. Thanks to everyone for keeping me in their thoughts and prayers!!

The team in the video was down here 5 days after the earthquake for a week and is the group I'm working with now. They're great but you can blame them for the lack of blog posts as I'm wiped out from another incredibly long and busy day! WARNING parts of the clip are graphic so not for the squeamish
Oh and today I scrubbed the first ever VP shunt in northern haiti! We did two today bc we have a neurosurgeon from DC who's awesome. But these kids had heads the size of soccer balls-it was crazy
Happy Valentines Day! Love you all!
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerryCarolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09497243028376883304noreply@blogger.com3
